What LAMal already covers
Since 2017, basic LAMal reimburses four complementary medicines — acupuncture, homeopathy, anthroposophic medicine and phytotherapy — but only when delivered by a physician with recognized training. Outside that (non-physician therapists, osteopathy, naturopathy), basic insurance does not cover the care.
What goes through supplementary cover (LCA)
For therapies delivered by non-physician therapists (osteopathy, naturopathy, shiatsu, reflexology), a supplementary "alternative medicine" plan (LCA) takes over. It typically reimburses a percentage per session up to an annual cap, and often requires the therapist to be listed in a register (RME, ASCA). Check the approved methods and therapists before subscribing.
How to choose your alternative-medicine plan
Look first at which methods are actually covered (plans differ), the reimbursement percentage per session, the annual cap, and the required therapist register. Price depends on your age and breadth of cover: compare several offers rather than the premium alone. As with any LCA, subscribe young and healthy.
