What is the Telmed model?
Telmed is an alternative basic (LAMal) model: before any consultation (except life-threatening emergencies, and depending on the insurer except gynaecologist and ophthalmologist) you first call a telemedicine hotline, which advises you and refers you if needed. In exchange, your premium is reduced. Covered benefits remain exactly those of basic LAMal.
How much do you save with Telmed?
The Telmed model cuts the basic premium by roughly 12-20% depending on the insurer and canton — often several hundred francs a year for a minimal constraint if you rarely see a doctor. The exact rebate varies by insurer, so it pays to compare.
Telmed versus the other models
There are four main models. Standard (free choice of doctor, most expensive). Family doctor: you see your GP first (about -10 to -18%). HMO: you use a designated group practice (about -15 to -25%, the largest). Telmed: you call the hotline first (12-20%). The right choice depends on your comfort with a first phone consultation.
Who is the Telmed model best for?
Telmed is ideal if you're healthy, rarely consult and have no specialist to see regularly — the hotline is open 24/7 and often saves a trip. If you follow treatment with a specific specialist or want free choice of every doctor, standard or family-doctor may suit you better. You can switch model on January 1 by telling your insurer before the end of November.
