What is the right to choose?
As a cross-border worker employed in Switzerland but living in France, you are in principle subject to Swiss LAMal. But the France-Switzerland agreement grants a "right to choose": LAMal, the French CMU (social security), or — historically — private insurance. The choice is made when you start your job.
LAMal, CMU or private: how to compare
CMU costs 8% of reference taxable income (above an allowance) — cheap at low income, expensive at high income. LAMal has a fixed premium per person (income-independent) and gives access to care in both Switzerland and France. The right choice depends on income, family size and where you seek care.
An irrevocable choice
The option is exercised only once and the choice is generally final for as long as you hold cross-border status (barring a major change). Don't take it lightly: compare real costs for your situation, care access for the whole family, and the medical network. A costly mistake here lasts years.
