Why insurers ask a questionnaire
Unlike basic LAMal (which can't be refused you), supplementaries fall under the LCA: the insurer assesses risk before accepting. The health questionnaire helps it decide whether to accept you, at what price, and with possible exclusions or reserves for pre-existing conditions. It's a normal step in any LCA subscription.
Declare honestly: the golden rule
Answer the questions accurately: history, ongoing treatments, known conditions. A non-disclosure — a false answer or omission about a fact you knew and that was asked — can let the insurer reduce benefits or even cancel the contract, sometimes after a claim. A clear exclusion at subscription beats a denied claim later.
If refused or excluded
One insurer may refuse you or exclude certain care; another may accept on better terms, since underwriting policies differ. So it pays to compare several offers. Above all, subscribe your supplementaries young and healthy: that's when the questionnaire causes the fewest problems and cover is broadest.
