What is the subsidy (premium reduction)?
The subsidy — officially the "individual premium reduction" — is cantonal aid that partially or fully reduces your basic LAMal premium. It is funded by the Confederation and the cantons and targets modest- to middle-income households. It is a right, not a favor: hundreds of thousands benefit each year.
Who qualifies?
Eligibility depends on your taxable income, wealth, household size and canton of residence. Each canton sets its own thresholds and scales — they vary widely from Geneva to Vaud, Zurich to Ticino. Families with children, young adults in education and recipients of supplementary benefits are often prioritized. The only way to be sure: check with your canton.
How to apply?
Apply to the competent cantonal body (compensation office or cantonal health-insurance service). In some cantons the right is computed automatically from your tax return; in others you must apply each year, often before a deadline. Tip: never assume you don't qualify — apply, the assessment is free.
A subsidy doesn't replace comparing
Important: the subsidy lowers what you pay, but premiums still vary widely between insurers. By choosing a cheaper insurer AND receiving your subsidy, you stack both savings. Always start by comparing LAMal premiums in your commune, then claim your subsidy — that's the winning combination.
