LAMal deductible explained: choosing 300 vs 2,500

Break-even math and Polia advice by health profile.

What is the deductible?

The deductible is what you pay out-of-pocket each year before the insurer reimburses. In basic LAMal, you choose between CHF 300 (min, highest premium) and CHF 2,500 (max, lowest premium). Above the deductible, 10% co-payment up to CHF 700/year cap.

Break-even math

For an adult moving from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 deductible, premium savings are typically CHF 720/year. Break-even: if yearly care costs stay under CHF 1,730, high deductible wins. For 80% of healthy insured, CHF 2,500 is mathematically superior over time.

When low deductible still makes sense

Three cases: chronic condition needing regular care (>CHF 2,500/yr predictable), planned pregnancy, scheduled surgery. Polia tip: recalculate every fall — you can adjust deductible for next year before November 30.
